Die bekannten Risikofaktoren f�r die Entstehung von PC sind: schlechte Hygiene, Phimose, Infektion mit dem humanen Papillomavirus (HPV), Tabakkonsum und riskantes Sexualverhalten. Eine HPV-Infektion liegt bei 30 bis 50 Prozent der F�lle von Peniskrebs vor. Und der immunhistochemische Test auf p16INK4a wird als Indikator f�r das Vorhandensein von HPV und als prognostischer Marker f�r Plattenepithelkarzinome an verschiedenen Stellen verwendet.
