Qualquer esfor�o para manter a via a�rea aberta � importante e salva vidas nessas situa��es. Deve ser feita uma escolha quanto ao tipo de controlo das vias a�reas que funcionar� melhor para a cirurgia planeada. Alguns doentes entram na sala de opera��es conscientes, respirando por si pr�prios e com apenas pequenas les�es maxilofaciais. A intuba��o nasoendotraqueal pode ser utilizada para o controlo das vias a�reas durante a cirurgia em alguns doentes. Os doentes com fracturas do ter�o m�dio da face ou fracturas na base do cr�nio devem geralmente evitar a entuba��o nasoendotraqueal. Quando um doente necessita de intuba��o facial, um m�todo menos utilizado, seguro e eficaz � a intuba��o submental.
