A excis�o de uma frac��o deles depende de pequenos RNAs maternos ligados a prote�nas de Piwi (chamados scnRNAs) que s�o produzidos a partir de todo o genoma da linha germinal durante a meiose. Este mecanismo coloca um problema de conjuga��o entre duas estirpes com polimorfismos de inser��o: uma c�lula ser� teoricamente incapaz de excisar um SEI transportado pelo alelo paterno recebido se este SEI estiver ausente do alelo paterno ou se a sequ�ncia for demasiado divergente. Esta tese mostra que os polimorfismos n�o geram defeitos de excis�o materna. Contudo, um mecanismo desconhecido parece causar problemas de excis�o para SEIs hemizigotos e pode contribuir para o isolamento reprodutivo.
