Un API peut effectuer des op�rations discr�tes et continues qu'un PC ne peut pas faire, et il est mieux adapt� aux environnements industriels. Un API est un ordinateur num�rique "robuste" qui traite les op�rations �lectrom�caniques dans l'industrie. L'industrie 4.0 et l'internet industriel des objets vont accro�tre la popularit� des API. Pour ces mouvements, les API doivent se connecter au cloud via MQTT et aux bases de donn�es via SQL. Les PLC vont gagner en importance dans l'automatisation des machines. La plupart des PLC peuvent �tre programm�s � l'aide d'un ordinateur et d'un logiciel. La norme CEI 61131-3 sp�cifie cinq langages API.
