Ce proc�d� a permis de souder un certain nombre d'alliages d'aluminium qui n'�taient pas recommand�s auparavant (alliages d'aluminium de la s�rie 2000 et de la s�rie 7000 contenant du cuivre). �tant donn� que le mat�riau soumis au proc�d� FSW ne fond pas et ne se re-solidifie pas, le m�tal soud� r�sultant est exempt de porosit� et pr�sente une distorsion moindre. Un autre avantage est qu'il s'agit d'un proc�d� respectueux de l'environnement. Le proc�d� FSW est un proc�d� d'assemblage thermom�canique localis� � l'�tat solide. Dans le proc�d� FSW, un outil rotatif � �paulement non consommable est plong� dans l'interface entre deux plaques � souder, jusqu'� ce que l'�paulement touche la surface du mat�riau de base, puis l'outil est d�plac� transversalement le long de la ligne de soudure.
