Autor: Bronwyn Cosgrave, ehemalige Kulturredakteurin der britischen Vogue, arbeitet heute als freie Autorin, Kuratorin und Fernsehschaffende Auch, wenn man schon einiges über Coco Chanel gesehen und gelesen hat, tauchen doch immer wieder überraschende Aspekte auf. Besonders die Kämpfernatur und das Durchsetzungsvermögen der größten europäischen Designerin des vergangenen Jahrhunderts werden auch als Quelle ihrer modischen Ausrichtung erkennbar. Schon bemerkenswert, wie sich das mittellose Heimkind in die bessere Gesellschaft gekämpft hat, was natürlich auch das Sprungbrett in die Unternehmerkarriere darstellte. Für Coco Chanel bedeutete "Frau sein" kein Hindernis, sondern ein selbstverständliches Mittel, sich den Weg ins Leben zu bahnen. Doch der Antrieb entsprang wohl auch dem Streben, nie wieder arm sein zu wollen. Mit welcher Zielstrebigkeit sie, eigentlich schon längst erfolgreich, den Ausbau oder auch-nach dem Krieg-Wiederaufbau ihres Modeimperium verfolgt hat! Das mag auch die besondere Zuwendung zu teilweise überaus üppigem Schmuck erklären, der mit den oft schlichten und funktionellen Linien ihrer Mode eigentlich im Widerspruch stand: Chanel wollte Reichtum zeigen. Von der Modeseite her überraschte mich die Mittelmeer-Ära, in welcher Modelle erschienen, die man so gar nicht mit Chanel in Verbindung bringen würde: Stark taillierte Kleider, sogar Kleider mit Bustier und buntfröhliche, lebendige Farben. Es scheint, dass die Zeit in ihrer Villa "La Pause" Frau Chanel wohl eine besonders entspannte Lebensphase brachte. Insgesamt ein spannendes Büchlein, das es versteht, ein Verständnis für die Quellen der Mode aus der Biografie der Designerin herzustellen. Wenn die Vogue ihre Archive öffnet, dann erfährt man so einiges über das Leben von Coco Chanel (Gabrielle Chanel 1883-1971) die Modeschöpferin, die bis heute ihre Spuren hinterlassen hat indem sie einen lockeren, bequemen und eleganten Stil für Frauen entwickelt hat. Das Buch gibt einen kleinen(! ) schönen Einblick in ihre Jugend, ihre Berufsanfänge, ihre verschiedenen Arbeiten (Fotos und einige Zeichnungen von Bekleidung und Schmuck), ihre Geschäftsideen, ihren Lebensstil und den beruflichen Erfolg.
