In der Umsetzung dieses an sich sehr umfassenden Ansatzes jedoch wird das Kriterium "Lean" (schlank) immer wieder auf rigorose Einsparungen reduziert. Als Begr�ndung dieses "Cost Cutting" werden regelm��ig Argumente, wie die folgenden ins Feld gef�hrt: - Zu hohe Lohnnebenkosten. - Zu unflexible Arbeitszeiten und -vertr�ge. - Zu geringe Produktivit�t. - Zu starke Konkurrenz. - Ung�nstige Wechselkursentwicklungen. Es zeigt sich, da� die meisten Argumente relative Aussagen sind ("zu hohe...", "zu geringe..."), welche die eigene Leistung in Beziehung zur als unbeeinflu�bar angesehenen Umwelt setzen. Die eigentlichen Ursachen liegen jedoch tiefer: Unternehmen, die durch solche Tatbest�nde verletzbar sind, leiden unter ihren eigenen Verhaltensweisen in der Vergangenheit. Produkt-, Produktions-, oder Servicepolitik erweisen sich sp�testens durch eine Verschlechterung der Wettbewerbsposition in der Gegenwart als nicht ad�quat, um den Anforderungen der Zukunft zu begegnen. Daraus mu� geschlossen werden, da� Entwicklungen am Markt, die sich nun im Nachhinein als gravierende Probleme darstellen, in ihrer Tragweite ex ante nicht richtig eingesch�tzt wurden. Dies gilt besonders bei der Lancierung einer Basisinnovation, die eine Wettbewerbsarena von Grund auf neu definiert und dazu f�hren kann, da� andere Unternehmen "�ber Nacht" von der Marktentwicklung abgeh�ngt werden. So geschah es beispielsweise Ende der 50er Jahre mit den Herstellern von elektrischen R�hren, die durch die Einf�hrung des Transistors technisch und wirtschaftlich obsolet wurden.
