Anders als die meisten Fachkollegen seiner Zeit interessierten ihn aber auch in diesen kulturellen Reliktgebieten vor allem die Auswirkungen gesellschaftlicher Modernisierung auf lokales Brauchtum und die Kontaktphanomene zwischen den regionalen Traditionen. Mit dieser Gewichtsetzung auf Modernisierung und Hybridisierung in der Volkskultur wurde er zu einem Vorlaufer der heutigen Europaischen Ethnologie. Seine Analysen zum (Volks)theater und Film greifen der modernen Theater- und Filmsemiotik voraus.
