Die Entwicklung wohlgeordneter Strukturen von Ma- terialien mit besonderen Eigenschaften wird beispielsweise mit modischen Stichwortern wie Hochleistungskeramiken, N anostrukturen, intelligente Ma- terialien ("smart materials") oder Mikrosystemtechnik charakterisiert. In dies en Bereichen sollten interdisziplinar arbeitende "Materialwissenschaft- ler" uber Grundlagen der klassischen Studiengange der Physik, Chemie, Bio- logie und Ingenieurwissenschaften verfugen. Nur so lassen sich beispielswei- se die praktischen und theoretischen Aufgaben losen beim Herstellen neuer Materialien mit extremen thermischen, mechanischen, elektrischen, dielek- trischen, optischen oder magnetischen Eigenschaften, beim Miniaturisieren von elektronischen und optischen Bauelementen (" Top-down Approach"), beim Synthetisieren neuer organischer Strukturen ("Bottom-up Approach"), beim Simulieren biomolekularer Funktionseinheiten oder beim Aufbau von Hybridsystemen in Mikro- oder N anometerdimensionen mit einer Kombina- tion aus Halbleiter-Bauelementen und organischen oder biologischen Funk- tionseinheiten. Im Gegensatz zu den USA, wo es schon lange eigene Lehrstuhle und Studi- engange fur Materialwissenschaften gibt, werden in Deutschland die Studen- ten mit Interesse an dies em Gebiet uberwiegend in einem der o. g. klassischen Studiengange ausgebildet. Die physikalisch-chemische Grundausbildung deckt dabei i. allg. den fur das Grundlagenverstandnis zentralen Bereich ab, Spezialvorlesungen konzentrie- ren sich auf Teilaspekte. Aus der Idee, erstmalig einen systematischen Einstieg in die Materialwissen- schaften mit einem Schwerpunkt auf den physikalisch-chemischen Grundla- gen in Buchform zu veroffentlichen, entstanden zwei aufeinander abgestimm- te Monographien.
