Die Gerechtigkeit ist die Treue Gottes zu seinen Verhei�ungen, dem Recht zum Sieg zu verhelfen; die Barmherzigkeit ist die Liebe Gottes zu seinen Gesch�pfen, die Not leiden und Schuld auf sich laden; im Glauben wird Gottes Gerechtigkeit wie seine Barmherzigkeit angenommen und nachgeahmt - durch die Liebe zu Gott und zum N�chsten. Diese jesuanische Hermeneutik des Gesetzes und damit der Bibel Israels kommt nicht von ungef�hr. Sie nimmt den cantus firmus beider Testamente auf: dass Gottes h�chste Gerechtigkeit in seiner Barmherzigkeit kulminiert, weil sie nicht an irdische Grenzen gebunden ist, sondern himmlische Weite erlangt, und dass seine Barmherzigkeit nicht ungerecht, sondern gerecht ist, weil sie durch Gnade selbst da noch Recht schaffen kann, wo ein brutales Unrechtsregime katastrophale Verh�ltnisse heraufgef�hrt hat. Dass in der katholischen Kirche mit gro�em Echo ein "Jahr der Barmherzigkeit" ausgerufen worden ist, nimmt diesen Grundzug biblischer Theologie auf; es bejaht die Sehnsucht vieler Menschen, von Gott nicht verurteilt, sondern in aller Schw�che geliebt zu werden; es hat aber auch die dunkle Kehrseite einer kirchlichen Lehre und Praxis, die oft als ungerecht und unbarmherzig empfunden wird und dadurch zur gro�en Glaubw�rdigkeitskrise wird, weil anscheinend Prinzipien wichtiger sind als Einzelf�lle und Dogmen wichtiger als Personen.
