Die Ver�ffentlichung ist auf mehrere B�nde angelegt, es sind bisher drei B�nde erschienen. Walter Kempowski hat Ausz�ge aus den Tageb�chern Friedrich Helms' bereits im "Echolot" abgedruckt. Das Vorwort schrieb Kempowski im Fr�hjahr 2005, als Wimbauer die Edition vorzubereiten begann. "Mit B�chern wie diesem wird dem Vergessen Einhalt geboten", schreibt er darin. Eine Kostprobe aus dem Tagebuch von Helms: "Mein Auge f�llt auf den Gartenzaun eines Nachbars: mit Erstaunen sehe ich dort, wie an einem langen Schaft eine wei�e Fahne herausgesteckt wird. Noch will ich mich �ber diese eigentlich bei uns nie in Erw�gung gezogene Ma�nahme auslassen, als auch das Ger�cht die Stra�e entlang eilt, Russische Panzerwagen seien �ber den Bahndamm in den Ort gekommen und verhandelten dort wegen �bergabe des Ortes. (...) Die wei�e Fahne heraus! Nein, dieser Gedanke war zun�chst unfassbar. (...) Ganze Stra�enseiten zeigten Haus bei Haus das wei�e Tuch der �bergabe - wenigstens des Ortes und, war es Einbildung oder Tatsache, fast schien es, als ob durch das Wehen dieser "Fahnen" zun�chst ein voreiliges Aufatmen der Einzelnen ging!" (Seite 21).- Als einer der ersten Leser �u�erte sich Bachmann-Preistr�ger Lutz Seiler: "Gro�artig, wie Helms beschreibt und wunderbar, dass das erschienen ist. Ein wichtiges Dokument, stellenweise r�tselhaft."
