Los peces en cautiverio usualmente presentan disfunci�n reproductiva, dado que no experimentan los cambios ambientales que suceden en su h�bitat natural, como resultado se inhibe el correcto funcionamiento de la hip�fisis. Para lograr la reproducci�n en cautiverio es necesaria la inducci�n o estimulaci�n hormonal, siendo: preparaciones purificadas de gonadotropinas (GtHs), extracto de hip�fisis de carpa (EHC), hormona liberadora de gonadotropinas (GnRH -GnRHa) y gonadotropina cori�nica humana (hCG) las hormonas m�s frecuentes. En algunas especies se prefiere que el pez sea macho por caracter�sticas de mayor tama�o o mejor apariencia y para ello se realiza una reversi�n sexual, usando principalmente hormonas como: 17 meti-ltestosterona, Etiniltestosterona, Dietilestilbestrol, y Estrona. El elevado uso de estas hormonas tanto en la acuicultura como en diversas industrias indican un aumento en afecciones a los seres humanos y ecosistemas. Por lo cual se considera de gran importancia investigar el riesgo potencial que conlleva usar estos tipos de tratamientos hormonales, tanto para la salud p�blica, como para la salud de los ecosistemas acu�ticos.
