Darin ist der vorliegende Band mit seiner �bersicht �ber die Methoden zur Erforschung der in- ternationalen Beziehungen begr�ndet. Die hier gew�hlte Unterteilung von Methoden und Forschungsstra- tegien ist neu entwickelt worden, da bisher �bliche, oft dichotomische Gliederungsprinzipien (heuristisch-kritisch; axiomatisch-reduktiv/ induktiv; synthetisch-analytisch; usw.) f�r den spezifischen Gegen- standshereich als nicht gen�gend erscheinen, obwohl nat�rlich an sie angekn�pft wird. Dabei werden die Methoden nach den wesentlichen Charakteristiken differenziert, was aber nicht ausschlie�t, da� einige von ihnen nach anderen, untergeordneten Merkmalen auch anderen Methodentypen zuzuordnen w�ren. So ist z.B. die synoptische Me- thode nach Bergstr�sser bei uns der "holistischen Methode" subsu- miert worden, obwohl sie auch der verstehenden Methode nahesteht Aber hier interessiert prim�r ihr, ganzheitlicher" Aspekt, der - wie die Benennung ja auch schon besagt - wohl bei ihr dominant ist. Ebenso gibt es graphische Darstellungsweisen in mehreren Methoden und Techniken, obwohl hier nur die der Entscheidungsb�ume exem- plarisch dargestellt wird. Zentral f�r die Einteilung der Methoden ist der Gegensatz "holi- stisch - analytisch", mit dem an die Gegen�berstellung, synthetisch - analytisch" angekn�pft wird. Diese Gegen�berstellung ist als Kon- tinuum zu verstehen, an dessen einem Ende die, analytischen Me- thoden" anzusiedeln w�ren - analytisch hier verstanden, in Ankn�p- fung an die analytische Philosophie, aber �ber sie hinausgehend, als bewu�te oder unbewu�te methodologische Beschr�nkung des for- schenden Zugriffs, als Zergliederung des Gegenstandsbereiches.
