Las alpacas en el territorio peruano producen 91% de la producci�n mundial de fibra de esta especie. En el Per�, 90% de las alpacas y la totalidad de las llamas se encuentran en manos de peque�os criadores. Se estima que en los Andes Sudamericanos unas 150 000 familias est�n involucradas en las diferentes etapas de la producci�n, comercializaci�n y procesamiento de la fibra de CSA y de otros productos derivados de su crianza. El principal objetivo de la crianza de alpacas es la producci�n de fibra cuyas caracter�sticas de finura, elasticidad, resistencia, uniformidad, lustre, entre otras; le ha permitido ganar un sustancial mercado en el extranjero. Sin embargo, a pesar de tener un importante y creciente mercado, la producci�n de vell�n es muy baja (1.6 kg por animal), siendo necesario implementar efectivos programas gen�ticos y de manejo para incrementar esta productividad
