Behandlungen und Operationen sind durch die Entdeckung der Narkose weitge-hend schmerzarme Dinge geworden, schmerzintensive Krankheiten haben aufgrund hoch spezifischer Medikamente, die durch Krankenkassen und staatliche Subventionen f�r praktisch jeden B�rger erh�ltlich sind, im Allgemeinen ihren Stachel verloren. Dass all diese Errungenschaften einem h�chst bestaunenswerten Fortschritt des letzten Jahrhunderts zu verdanken sind, welches nur einen Bruchteil der Menschheitsgeschichte ausmacht, wird nur �u�erst selten bewusst wahrgenommen. Auch im neunzehnten Jahr-hundert - noch keine 200 Jahre zur�ck - waren die Wirkungen von �ther und Mor-phium, ersten Narkotika, der operativen Medizin noch so wenig gel�ufig wie der Physik die Quantentheorie. Chirurgie war ein riskantes Handwerk, die Operationen die H�lle . �rzte waren zwar notwendig, aber nicht beliebt, der Beruf nur f�r Menschen mir einem starken Herzen zu empfehlen1. Allerdings befinden wir uns dort bereits in der Zeit der Industrialisierung, in der der wissenschaftliche Fortschritt nicht mehr aufzuhalten und die Medizin auf dem Vormarsch war1.
