L�nder - Mittelalter, Fr�he Neuzeit, Note: 1, Universit�t Hamburg (Historisches Seminar), Veranstaltung: Hauptseminar "Gewalt im fr�hen Mittelalter", Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Einen wesentlichen Beitrag zu dem Erfolg und dem relativ starken Zulauf, den der Templerorden zu Beginn des zweiten Kreuzzuges erfuhr, leistete Bernhard von Clairvaux mit der 'Lobrede auf das neue Rittertum'. Selten sind die Kreuzz�ge je positiver bewertet worden als hier; nie zuvor wurde von Christen so aggressiv zur Gewalt gegen Andersgl�ubige aufgerufen. Zu Beginn dieser Arbeit steht eine Auseinandersetzung mit der Person Bernhard von Clairvaux. Hierf�r war es n�tig, auf Beschreibungen und Urteile zur�ck zu greifen, wie sie unterschiedlicher kaum sein k�nnten. Das hat vor allem damit zu tun, dass es sich bei Bernhard um eine im katholischen Sinne 'heilige' Figur handelt, was zu dem Ergebnis f�hrt, dass die Auseinandersetzung mit seiner Person selbst in j�ngster Zeit oft erschreckend unkritische und hagiographische Z�ge aufweist. Dem gegen�ber steht oft eine 'moderne' Herangehensweise, die Gefahr zu laufen scheint, den zeitlichen Kontext und die hochmittelalterliche Vorstellungswelt aus dem Auge zu verlieren und zu 'modern' zu urteilen. In dieser Arbeit ist es hoffentlich gelungen, beide Pole gegen�ber zu stellen und gleichzeitig den Spielraum f�r historische Interpretationen zu belassen.
