Estes compostos possuem caracter�sticas muito preocupantes a n�vel ambiental, tais como a sua toxicidade elevada, volatilidade e natureza inflam�vel. Este "cocktail" de caracter�sticas presentes num s� composto tem levantado v�rias quest�es ambientais. As emiss�es atmosf�ricas e contamina��o de lagos e rios s�o assuntos que est�o na ordem do dia e que t�m levado � proibi��o do uso destes compostos. Tendo em considera��o esses aspetos, emergiu a necessidade, de certa forma urgente, de alguns investigadores virarem esfor�os para investiga��es que os levassem ao encontro de um novo composto que pudesse ser utilizado em circunst�ncias id�nticas mas que ambientalmente fosse, de certa forma, menos poluente. A investiga��o, intitulada de "Engenharia Verde", levou ao aparecimento de novos compostos tais como o CO2 supercr�tico, os sistemas bif�sicos aquosos e, os mais interessantes, os l�quidos i�nicos.
