Mit dem zunehmenden Einsatz fossiler Energietrager zur Energieversorgung ging - zumindest in den Industriestaaten - der Einsatz regenerativer Energien zuruck; bezogen auf das Gesamtenergieaufkommen und ab gesehen von wenigen Ausnahmen sind sie heute fast bedeutungslos. Die Nutzung fossiler Energietrager ist jedoch mit einer Reihe von Nachteilen verbunden; sie werden von der Industriegesellschaft, die an der Schwelle zum 21. Jahrhundert bezuglich moglicher Umwelt- und Klimagefahren sowie anderer negati ver Folgen zunehmend sensibilisiert ist, immer weniger toleriert.
