Durch die Aufarbeitung der Forschungsgeschichte seit der letzten Auflage 1885 wurde die Zahl der Eintr�ge auf �ber 2500 erh�ht. Privilegien, Konzilsakten sowie Brief- und Rechtssammlungen wurden ebenso ausgewertet wie die wichtigste Historiographie. Einen zentralen Fortschritt erbrachte die bibliografische Aktualisierung.
