Noch in der Nachkriegszeit dienten sie z. T. als gef�hrliche Chiffre f�r die "guten Seiten" des Nationalsozialismus. Insgesamt waren diese "Volksprodukte" eine Verbindung von propagandistischem Fremd- und illusionistischem Selbstbetrug. Die Initiativen gingen vor allem von Robert Leys Deutscher Arbeitsfront sowie von Joseph Goebbels Propagandaministerium aus. Das Buch stellt die Produkte, Dienstleistungen und Initiativen in den Kontext von Politik, Ideologie und Wirtschaft im Nationalsozialismus. Die "Volksprodukte" besa�en eine Doppelfunktion. Sie waren Elemente der Propaganda, mit denen die Nationalsozialisten der Bev�lkerung eine sp�tere Wohlstandsgesellschaft versprachen, um ihr den tats�chlichen Konsumverzicht zu Gunsten der Aufr�stung akzeptabel zu machen. Aber sie repr�sentierten auch Planungen und Visionen einer spezifisch nationalsozialistischen Konsum- und Freizeitgesellschaft. Ihr Scheitern r�hrte daher, dass sich Autarkie, Aufr�stung und Expansion als vorrangige Politikziele und eine massive staatliche Konsumf�rderung auf der anderen Seite nicht gleichzeitig verfolgen lie�en.
