Unter Ber�cksichtigung des Gesamtwerks und zahlreicher handschriftlicher Quellen wird hier deshalb erstmals auf breiter Basis Herders umfangreiche Auseinandersetzung mit der antiken und zeitgen�ssischen Rhetorik aufgearbeitet und seine Rhetorikrezeption in Beziehung zu den Rhetorikkonzepten seines Umfeldes gesetzt. So wird ein komplexes Ineinander von Kritik, Anwendung und Transformation rhetorischen Theorie- und Praxiswissens in Herders Lebenswerk sichtbar. Die interdisziplin�r angelegte Untersuchung folgt Herders Thematisierung und struktureller Aufnahme verschiedener Rhetorikformen im p�dagogischen, theologisch-homiletischen, philosophischen, politischen und literarischen Diskurs und zeigt die Unterschiedlichkeit der situativen und systematischen Konnotationen des Rhetorikbegriffes im historischen Zusammenhang. Mit im Blick sind dabei immer das auch f�r Herders Theoriediskurs konstitutive praktische Interesse und seine Selbstzeugnisse als Prediger und Schulredner. In einem editorischen Anhang werden verschiedene Quellentexte und -dokumente erstmals zug�nglich gemacht.
