Er hat sich zum Ziel gesetzt, den Zusammenhang von Wirtschaft und Kultur in der Antike zwischen 2000 v.Chr. und 500 n.Chr. zu untersuchen. Dabei wird vor allem auf die kulturspezifischen Werte- und Regelsysteme fokussiert, die in den antiken Quellen im Kontext okonomischer Aktivitaten fassbar werden. Im Mittelpunkt steht also die Frage, auf welche Weise kulturelle Faktoren das wirtschaftliche Agieren beeinflussen und wie dieses wiederum auf Kultur einwirkt. Die hier versammelten Beitrage gehen der Fragestellung anhand vielfaltiger Quellen und aus interdisziplinaren Blickwinkeln nach. Die Frage nach dem Verhaltnis von Wirtschaft und Kultur stellt ein aktuelles Thema in den verschiedenen wirtschaftswissenschaftlichen Disziplinen dar. Die Adaption ihrer Theorien und Modelle erscheint auch fur die Altertumswissenschaften vielversprechend, insbesondere die der Neuen Institutionenokonomik (NIO), die von einer Wechselwirkung zwischen Wirtschaft und Kultur ausgeht und daher das kulturelle Umfeld in die Analyse mit einbezieht.
