Jahrhunderts in der Residenzstadt Schwerin entstandene Bibliothek von Herzog Johann Albrecht I. von Mecklenburg (1525-1576) ist fur die Forschung im Bereich Renaissance/Humanismus/Reformation von besonderem Interesse. 3819 Bande mit 5044 Werken - darunter 38 Handschriften und 12 Inkunabeln - zeugen von der Absicht des Herzogs, eine Buchersammlung zu schaffen, die das Wissen der Zeit moglichst umfassend in sich vereint. Dabei verdeutlichen theologische Werke als starkste Gruppe Johann Albrechts Engagement als frommer Christ und uberzeugter Lutheraner, gefolgt von der Philologie, die griechische, lateinische, germanische und romanische Werke umfasst. Besonders eindrucksvoll zu verfolgen ist die Entwicklung der Rechtswissenschaft vom Mittelalter bis hin zum Humanismus und die vielseitigen medizinischen Werke spiegeln beginnend mit der antiken Tradition bei Hippokrates und Galenus die Entwicklung der Medizin uber die hellenistische und byzantinische Heilkunde, die syrische Rezeption und die islamisch-arabische Medizin bis hin zur humanistischen Medizin des 16. Jahrhunderts. Doch auch Philosophie, Geschichte, Geographie, Naturwissenschaften, Musik, Architektur und weitere Wissensgebiete sind zahlreich vertreten, nicht zuletzt wurde auch Wert auf eine breite Wurdigung der Drucker sowie eine moglichst umfangreiche Erfassung von Buchbindern und Buchbinderwerkstatten gelegt.
