Im Mittelalter gerieten die aufstrebenden Stadte unter den Einfluss der europaischen Herrscher und des romischen Kirchenstaats. Im besonderen Masse druckten dann die Jahrhunderte unter venezianischer Herrschaft dem Land ihren Stempel auf.
