On comprendrait mal ce que celle-ci est presentement en ignorant la IIIe Republique. En inventorier l'heritage, retrouver les traces de ses apports, tel est le propos de ce livre, et telle est l'une de ses raisons d'etre. R.R. Grande figure du paysage intellectuel francais des cinquante dernieres annees, Rene Remond (1918-2007) est l'auteur d'une trentaine d'ouvrages traitant de l'histoire politique, intellectuelle et religieuse de la France des XIXe et XXe siecles. Parmi ses nombreux ouvrages sur ce sujet, il faut citer au moins Les Droites en France (nouv. ed. 1982), L'Anticlericalisme en France (nouv. ed. 1999) et Le siecle dernier (nouv. ed. 2003).
