Ce jour-l�, ils d�busquent presque malgr� eux un Juif cach� dans la for�t et, soucieux de se nourrir et de retarder leur retour au camp, ils vont proc�der dans une maison abandonn�e � la laborieuse pr�paration d'un repas avec le peu de vivres dont ils disposent. Les hommes doivent trouver de quoi faire du feu et r�ussir � porter � �bullition une casserole d'eau. Ils en viennent � br�ler le banc sur lequel ils sont assis, ainsi que la porte derri�re laquelle ils ont isol� le Juif. Le tour de force d'Hubert Mingarelli constitue � mettre autour d'une table trois soldats allemands, un jeune Juif et un Polonais de passage dont l'antis�mitisme affich� va, contre toute attente, r�veiller chez les soldats un sentiment de fraternit� vis-�-vis de leur proie. Se posent alors des questions monstrueuses: Faut-il proposer au Juif de manger ? Et, une fois le repas partag�, faut-il le ramener ou le lib�rer ? C'est ici qu'Hubert Mingarelli, dans son style sobre et pr�cis, met le lecteur face � sa conscience et la logique meurtri�re � laquelle sont soumis ces hommes. En convoquant la peur, la raison, l'espoir, la folie et l'humanit� contenus en chacun d'entre nous.
