Il vient de subir une grosse op�ration, mais qui n'int�resse plus personne, sauf la dame qui tient les toilettes du jardin, un clochard nomm� Ricardo, la directrice du th��tre de marionnettes et un vieil homme � cheveux blancs qui ressemble � Jean Valjean. La solitude fait peu � peu surgir autour de lui tous les h�ros de son enfance, ceux qui ont r�ellement fr�quent� le Luxembourg, comme Jean Valjean et les trois mousquetaires, mais aussi Tarzan qui ne comprend pas pourquoi on construit des maisons autour des jardins alors qu'il y a tant de places dans les arbres, des orphelins, des pirates, des Indiens et Richelieu qui surveille tout ce petit monde � travers les fen�tres du S�nat. Il y a aussi la mort, repr�sent�e par une marionnette g�ante v�tue de blanc qui a des pattes de poulet � la place des mains, et une belle Italienne coul�e dans du bronze. Le bruit du monde parvient assourdi jusqu'au jardin: on entend les cris des jeunes gens qui manifestent place de la Constitution � Ath�nes, on apprend que Zorba a dans� dans le Bundestag devant les d�put�s allemands. Comme les romanciers aiment bien envoyer leurs personnages sous terre, dans les �gouts ou dans les terriers, l'histoire finira dans les catacombes. Jean Valjean aura la bont� de porter le narrateur sur son dos. Comme on le devine, le personnage central du roman est la litt�rature. Vassilis Alexakis a publi� entre autres Paris-Ath�nes , La langue maternelle (prix M�dicis 1995), Les mots �trangers, Ap. J.-C . (Grand Prix du roman de l'Acad�mie Fran�aise 2007) et Le premier mot . L'enfant grec est son quatorzi�me roman.
