Le probl�me fait d'autant plus r�ver qu'il est difficile � r�soudre. Il fallait donc un roman pour l'aborder. Le premier mot est avant tout l'histoire d'un homme, Miltiadis, n� en Gr�ce, professeur de litt�rature compar�e � Paris, qui aimerait, avant de mourir, conna�tre ce mot. H�las, il meurt avant de l'avoir d�couvert. C'est sa soeur, une femme d'une soixantaine d'ann�es, qui se chargera d'�lucider l'�nigme. Elle rencontrera des scientifiques de tous bords, squi lui parleront du cerveau humain, du langage des b�b�s, des chimpanz�s et de l'homo sapiens, de Darwin et des cr�ationnistes, de Rousseau et d'un roi d'�gypte qui avait fait �lever ses enfants loin du monde pour voir dans quelle langue ils s'exprimeraient spontan�ment. On verra �voluer autour d'elle plusieurs personnages; Aliki, la femme du disparu, Th�ano, sa fille, Jean-Christophe, son ami de toujours, Bouvier, son vieux ma�tre, un professeur de linguistique am�ricain qui meurt dans les bras d'une femme dont il ne conna�t pas la langue, une mendiante roumaine qui apprend le fran�ais sous la couverture qui lui sert d'abri, et Audrey, une jeune fille sourde, qui se pr�pare � participer � une repr�sentation d'Antigone en langue des signes. Il semble que nos anc�tres gesticulaient beaucoup avant de commencer � parler, comme d'ailleurs nous continuons � le faire. La passion que met cette femme � mener son enqu�te jusqu'au bout donne la mesure de sa d�tresse. Comme elle ne peut pas �chouer, elle r�ussira.
