Aber nun wendest du dich um und erblickest kaum zwanzig Schritte hinter uns ein gotisches Geb�ude, dessen Portal reich mit Statuen verziert ist. - Durch die dunklen Zweige der Platanen schauen dich Heiligenbilder recht mit klaren, lebendigen Augen an; es sind die frischen Freskogem�lde, die auf der breiten Mauer prangen. - Die Sonne steht glutrot auf dem Geb�rge, der Abendwind erhebt sich, �berall Leben und Bewegung. Fl�sternd und rauschend gehen wunderbare Stimmen durch Baum und Geb�sch: als w�rden sie steigend und steigend zu Gesang und Orgelklang, so t�nt es von ferne her�ber. Ernste M�nner, in weit gefalteten Gew�ndern, wandeln, den frommen Blick emporgerichtet, schweigend durch die Laubg�nge des Gartens. Sind denn die Heiligenbilder lebendig worden und herabgestiegen von den hohen Simsen? - Dich umwehen die geheimnisvollen Schauer der wunderbaren Sagen und Legenden, die dort abgebildet, dir ist, als gesch�he alles vor deinen Augen, und willig magst du daran glauben. In dieser Stimmung liesest du die Geschichte des Medardus, und wohl magst du auch dann die sonderbaren Visionen des M�nchs f�r mehr halten als f�r das regellose Spiel der erhitzten Einbildungskraft.
