The Second Edition of Agnew's popular text is thoroughly updated. The coverage of delinquency theories is expanded, more examples are provided, and a Teaching Aids section appears at the end of each chapter. The four sections of this text examine: the nature and extent of delinquency. It includes chapters on the nature and origins of the juvenile justice system; the extent of and trends in delinquency, including reasons for the recent decline in delinquency; and the characteristics of delinquents; the major theories of delinquency. It discusses strain, social learning, control, and labeling theories; as well as efforts to use these theories to explain patterns of offending over the life course, why delinquency is more likely in some situations than others, and why some groups and communities have higher rates of delinquency than others (e.g., why males have higher rates of delinquency than females); and, the major research on the causes of delinquency. It includes research on the relationship between delinquency and biological factors, individual traits, family factors, school experiences, delinquent peer groups and gangs, the mass media, religion, work, drugs, and guns. correctional agencies to control delinquency. It examines the effectiveness of these agencies, ways to increase their effectiveness, and the extent to which they discriminate against certain groups. Also, examines four general strategies for controlling delinquency - the get tough strategies of deterrence and incapacitation, and the strategies of rehabilitation and prevention. The text offers several compelling features that distinguish it from other books. Each chapter is organized around a set of thought-provoking questions, major findings from the literature are clearly highlighted, and special care is taken to help students sort through complicated and contradictory findings. The different versions of each of the leading delinquency theories are combined, with general versions of strain, social learning, control, and labeling theories being presented. These general versions reflect the latest research and theoretical developments. Other texts present brief descriptions of the many different versions of the leading delinquency theories, which can overwhelm and confuse students. on the causes and control of delinquency, including a chapter that presents an integrated theory of the causes of delinquency and another that presents a comprehensive strategy for controlling delinquency. Much coverage is devoted to how criminologists conduct their research - with chapters on how they measure delinquency, examine whether certain factors cause delinquency, and determine whether programs and policies are effective in controlling delinquency. These chapters better enable students to evaluate what they read and hear regarding delinquency. Each chapter includes review questions, a list of key terms, discussion questions, and exercises and controversial cases that call for the application of text materials. A revised Instructor's Manual/Testing Program is available. An online Interactive Student Study Guide is also available on our website.
