This is a detailed and harrowing account of life for the average person inside Scientology. Here's why it's hard for people to leave - they have no contacts on the outside having been forced to break ties w/ anyone not of the church, they have no documented work history, they have little education beyond elementary school, they have no car, or savings and some don't even know exactly where they are. AND, many are deep in debt to the church having been coerced into signing 'million year contracts' for Scientology training. Members are actively encouraged to report on each other. If they try to leave and fail, physical and emotional abuse follows.
Most members , including children, work morning to night 6-7 days a week, for the church, and for little money.
Being related to one of the high level men in the church is no protection - see 'Beyond Belief' by Jenna Miscavige Hill, (niece of David Miscavige) another detailed and harrowing insider account. Though the 2 books were written separately there is remarkable consistency in the stories.
