Rich in detail, the author tells the story of the attack on Washington City that could have changed the outcome of the Civil War. A large Confederate force marches from Lexington VA to Maryland virtually unopposed. At that point, a battle occurs that literally saved the city. As Grant and the government scramble to bring troops to the city, the Confederate army marches all the way to Tennallytown, and loses the race.
A day earlier, better weather, and Washington City would have been overrun. The author describes the principals, the major events and provides a detailed understanding of how this came to be. You don't have to be a history buff to enjoy this book.
