Metternich as Wunderkind
I am halfway through this book and found it very readable and interesting. But as I read I wonder if Alan Palmer is not a fan of Metternich. He certainly never misses a chance to show opinions from mild distain to out and out sarcasm. From other more educated reviews Palmer apparently does convey an historically accurate picture of Metternich' s times and his influence on those times. Perhaps Palmer is all the better for having portrayed the man complete, warts and all, while acknowledging Metternich's influence on a tempestuous time when nationalism was growing against equally reactionary forces. Great book.
