However, knowledge of the existing techniques is not generally available to engineers and non-expert researchers. This comprehensive, fully illustrated book explains the basic measurement techniques, the commercially available instruments in different application fields, the current perception of 3-D surface topography analysis in the academic world and in industry, and the commonly used 3-D parameters and plots for characterizing and visualizing 3-D surface topography. It provides the information needed to evaluate the suitability of the instruments available for a specific use, and the techniques and parametes with which to assess surfaces. The Metrology Centre at the Univesity of Birmingham is one of the world's leading metrology research laboratories, whose research team at Birmingham has produced over 70 publications in metrology, mostly related to surface metrology. A specialist interest is the study of surface finish and roundness.
