This is the classic book that put Turgenev on the literary map--both in his own time and for all of history. The strength of this, his first book, was such that, even if Turgenev had never written another book, he would still be recognized as the father of the modern short story. Indeed, A Sportsman's Notebook was Hemmingway's favorite book, and it is not hard to see traces of Turgenevs influence in the work of Hemmingway and other later-day masters of the short story. Notebook contains twenty-five stories in which Turgenev shares shares memories from the hunting expeditions that lead him throughout the Russian countryside. His writing is strong because there is real life in his people and real beauty in his landscapes.

This collection of short stories established Turgenev on both the Russian and World stage as a brilliant writer. I was so impressed that I made a visit to Spasskoye this May to see through my own eyes the scenery he was writing about, it was well worth the effort.
Turgenev was a most humane man, seeing how his mother treated serfs made him protest against this Russian form of slavery by writing about the lives of the folk he met on his walks about the Orel region with his gun, they became human and not just something of value to be used to work and possibly sold or mortgaged!
His obituary of Gogol had him imprisoned on his estate and continued to have him leave Russia for long periods.
If you had never read Turgenev like myself just delve into this and you will be addicted, he is now my number one writer and led me on to other greats of Russian literature, they are really that good I cannot believed I existed without them.
