Whenever contemporary artists are asked to make a list of those artists that they have found most inspirational, the name of Bruce Nauman is seldom absent. "Bruce Nauman: Make Me Think Me" features a collection of critical appraisals by leading writers from both sides of the Atlantic. It surveys Nauman's career, focusing particularly on his preoccupation with the human condition. Over sixty works from 1966-2005 are illustrated and discussed, including sculpture, neons, video, performance, installation and drawing. Nauman's fascination with and manipulation of language, including puns, palindromes and repetition, are examined alongside his use of instructional texts that set out to control the behaviour of the audience. His use of the body, be it his own, the viewer's or that of the animal and human head casts he has made since the late 1980s, provides another central theme, as does the role of the audience in inhabiting and moving through Nauman's work. This timely survey will bring new insights on the career of one of the most influential artists of the last half century.
