Dawn French is one of the greatest comedy actresses of our time, with a career that has spanned nearly three decades, encompassing a vast and brilliant array of characters. Loved for her irreverant humour, Dawn has achieved massive mainstream success while continuing to push boundaries and challenge stereotypes. Here she describes the journey that would eventually establish her as a perhaps unlikely, but nevertheless genuine, national treasure. Dawn began her career as part of the groundbreaking alternative comedy group, the Comic Strip, marking a radical departure from the more traditional comedy acts of the time. Later came the all-female Girls On Top, which teamed Dawn with Jennifer Saunders, Ruby Wax and Tracy Ullman and firmly established women in British comedy. As part of the wildly successful and much loved duo French and Saunders, Dawn helped create a repetoire of brilliantly observed characters, parodying popular culture and impersonating everything from Madonna and Harry Potter to The Exorcist. Dawn's more recent role in the Vicar of Dibley showcased not only her talent but also her ability to take a controversial and topical issue and make it mainstream - and very funny. From her early years as an RAF child and her flat-sharing antics with Jennifer Saunders, to her outspoken views on sizism and her marriage to Lenny Henry, Dear Fatty will chronicle the extraordinary, hilarious rise of a complex, dynamic and unstoppable woman.

disappointment
There is not a lot I can say really my headline says it all. I have for many years been a fan of Dawn French and have enjoyed watching her on T.V and looked forward to reading 'Dear Fatty' but I was very disappointed with the way it was written. I thought it would give us an insight into her life up to present day, instead it was written as letters to various friends and family and seemed to jump around all over the place. There were letters to people like Madonna that to me had no significance and added nothing to the book. This is just one example but it is the same sort of thing all through the book. Personally I would have liked to have read about Dawn French the person, without all the unecessary embellishments. I am an avid reader and enjoy autobiographies but this one was not at all what I expected as I said previously a bitter disappointment.

Dear Fatty ? Dawn French Opens Up
I was very pleased when at Christmastime, as requested, my darling man gave me Dear Fatty, Dawn French?s autobiography. The fact that it took me only two weeks to finish reading this marvelous book, despite having a seven month old occupying most of my time, should speak volumes for its inability to allow me to put it down! I only wish it could have lasted longer, because it was an eye opening account of a truly fascinating life. Written in the form of letters to friends, loved ones and others, French is able to convey the most personal of sentiments and make the reader feel that they have really been part of her life. Her natural wit oozes from the pages, as does her intense love for those close to her and her ability to see people for who they truly are. I felt throughout my magical two weeks a strong connection to her, and now am still baffled as to whether that connection was because she is my sort of person ? someone who in different circumstances I could be friends with, sharing opinions on so many topics ? or whether the connection was because she is a gifted writer in addition to her many other talents. I suspect it?s both.
