It takes him into the reality of daily life and combat in the Mediterranean theater in 1943-45 (Fondouk Pass, Hill 609, Salerno, Monte Cassino, Anzio and Lanuvio). Whilst the focus is on one hypothetical soldier, the generalities and experiences of the many are also examined and woven into the individual narrative thread.
