But an unforeseen tragedy upsets Elfrida's tranquillity: Oscar's wife and daughter are killed in a terrible car crash and, finding himself homeless, he accepts an invitation from an elderly cousin to take over a large and rambling house in Scotland. Oscar takes his broken heart northwards, and Elfrida goes with him. Corriedale becomes a magnet for various waifs and strays who converge upon it, including an unhappy teenage girl. It could be a recipe for disaster. But somehow the Christmas season weaves its magical spell and for Elfrida and Oscar, in the evening of their lives, the winter solstice brings love and solace.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story and have read the book several times. It covers all ages of characters who have had to overcome various difficult situations with the help of their friends, family, and even strangers. I highly recommend it to anyone.

Winter Solstice
Having read everything Rosamund Pilcher wrote, and then her son, Robin's, books, I eagerly looked forward to hearing an audio book of "Winter Solstice". It is my favorite of her books, and have read and re-read it many times over the years. Lynn Redgrave gave the characters the perfect voices, I could hear Elfrida Phipps, Oscar Blundell, and everyone else, and see them in my mind. Excellent! Of course, I would have enjoyed an unabridged version, but the abridged audio satisfied my longing to bring those characters to life! Wonderful job, Lynn Redgrave! Thanks much to Alibris for your help.
