A further complication is that the Brotherhood is squatting on the land of a former Freedmen's community, and one of the last descendants of these former slaves is actually a suspect in the possible murder of the missing boy. Instructed by his lieutenant to use the investigation to gather more evidence that might help to take down the Texas chapter of the Brotherhood, Darren is playing very dangerous game indeed.

African-American police detective in Eastern Texas
Locke is a rare mystery writer in that she's African-American and sets her stories not in urban America but in backwoods Texas, near the LA border so her characters are a mix of both white and black and Native American. This book also includes some White Nationalists. Her detective is a black Texas Ranger, a rare breed who must traverse the world of the Aryan Brotherhood, a small Native American group, as well as black farmers who have owned the land for generations, while looking for a missing white boy, son of one of the White Nationalists. Locke has a sharp, compassionate eye and the book is rich with subplots and complexity. A good read.
