Hollywood Wants To Kill you is is a quippy yet fact filled book about the various threats to mankind and the earth.
From asteroids to insomnia to killer plants, this book covers the major threats to to humanity whilst giving interesting statistics and scientific facts about how we all may die.
My overriding feeling whilst reading this book is a sense of wonderment that any of us are still alive. The facts presented are very incredible, and show just how delicate and yet tenacious life is.
The authors of this book present the idea that it's healthy for us to to encounter death and destruction in movies and on television to help us to get to grips with the idea of our own mortality, and the fact that one day we really may all die in in a massive disaster, and if we didn't see it coming, well, that's our own fault.
I would agree that to some degree facing up to the inevitability of death can free you up to live your life, taking every day as it comes. It could also be argued however, that too much knowledge of death could lead us to not live as fully, in fear of disaster, constantly knowing that it's just around the corner.
This book does seem to accomplish the authors' goal however, and simply puts us on the solid ground of fact, so that we can can live in the modern world in knowledge of the threats that are always around us. We encounter so many dangers constantly, without even knowing they are there. If we keep our eyes open there are simple measures we can take to help prevent our own deaths and the death of our planet.
Each chapter covers a single threat, discussing how probable that threat really is and talking through some very detailed scientific concepts and theolaries related to it.
Thankfully there are also some cheerier thoughts and statistics about how unlikely some of the threats are and what government organisations are already doing to prevent them from happening.
This is a very intelligently written book, which is also attention-grabbing and easy to flip through. Each chapter focuses on a different film related to the theme of the chapter, and uses it to draw out different ideas and concepts.
I would definitely recommend this book to general film fans, and those interested in the coming apocalypse. This book is full of fascinating facts that relate to our everyday lives, and the average person will find a few chapters of particular interest. With incredible facts about climate change, infectious diseases, plastic and plant life, this book manages to be genuinely applicable to modern life.
