The extraordinary story of an obscure German princess who became one of the most powerful women in history. Born into a minor noble family, Catherine transformed herself into empress of Russia by sheer determination. For thirty-four years, the government, foreign policy, cultural development and welfare of the Russian people were in her hands. She dealt with domestic rebellion, foreign wars and the tidal wave of political change and violence churned up by the French Revolution. History offers few stories richer than that of Catherine the Great. Robert K. Massie brings an eternally fascinating woman together with her family, friends, ministers, generals, lovers and enemies - vividly and triumphantly to life.

I don't read a lot of biographies; I prefer well-researched historical fiction. However, this book was beautifully written and highly interesting to boot; I could scarcely put it down. I bought a copy for my mother and then went out and bought Massie's "Peter the Great," which I am currently reading. I highly recommend it.

Reads like a Historical Novel
Readable biography of an amazing woman. The first half is about her life growing up and moving to Russia. The second half is her life as Empress. A fascinating story.

Very readable biography of Catherine the Great
After hearing the author, Robert Massie, interviewed on Public Radio, I was determined to read this book about Catherine the Great. He used the letters and other writings of this remarkable woman to bring her to life for the reader. I think this is a highly-recommendable book.
