Entre mille preuves qu'on en pourrait donner, nous citerions volontiers la paresseuse obstination avec laquelle tous les �crivains appel�s � raconter Le r�gne de Charles Ier ont tour � tour copi� la fameuse Histoire de la R�bellion, livre remarquablement �crit d'ailleurs, et qui occupe � bon droit dans la litt�rature anglaise la place que les M�moires du cardinal de Retz ont dans la n�tre. M�me talent d'exposition, m�me, vivacit� de style les caract�risent, et, comme peintre de portraits, nous donnerions volontiers la palme � Clarendon. Par malheur, en fait d'exactitude, de loyaut�, de d�sint�ressement, ces deux hommes se valent. C'�taient deux politiques presque �galement rompus � l'intrigue, et dont les passions personnelles ont fauss� de la mani�re la plus d�plorable les t�moignages � l'aide desquels ils sollicitaient la post�rit� de sanctionner leurs id�es et d'absoudre leur conduite..."
