This book is not a commentary on the Fathers. It is a series of reflections prompted by passages that I came across as I read some of the works of the Fathers. The passages are taken directly from the Fathers. The reflections are entirely mine. You should not hold the Fathers accountable for what I write, although I would like to think that the Fathers would be comfortable with what I have to say. They probably would not be so comfortable, however, because they lived in a very different age and culture. Their thinking did not reflect twenty-first century American culture. My thinking does. So what you find in this book is a series of challenges across the centuries inviting me to reflect on my Catholic faith. With a little push from one of the Fathers, I take off on my own and see where it takes me.
