El entusiasta cari�o que este joven demostraba a su anciano jefe, hab�a sido y era el tema de burlas y censuras poco ben�volas entre sus compa�eros; los que no pudiendo comprender que un joven de brillantes prendas, formado para agradar y sobresalir en cualquier reuni�n, prefiriese a todas ellas la sociedad de un austero anciano, atribu�an esta preferencia, el uno a baja adulaci�n, el otro a orgulloso desd�n, otros en fin a extravagancia; en vista de que no hay intolerancia m�s acerba que la de la median�a hacia la superioridad. Pero todos estos desahogos de la malignidad se ce��an a sonrisas burlonas, a indirectas y chistes embozados: tal era el respeto que la conducta digna, cort�s e intachable del joven teniente hab�a sabido inspirarles.
