Si bien las primeras veinte dinast�as egipcias variaron en n�mero de gobernantes y duraci�n, la mayor�a compart�a un atributo importante: eran todas dinast�as nativas de Egipto. La �nica excepci�n importante vino durante el Segundo Periodo Intermedio, cuando un misterioso grupo de extranjeros, conocidos como los hicsos, conquistaron Egipto y establecieron las dinast�as XV y XVI poco tiempo despu�s del 1700 AEC. Durante siglos, el gobierno de los hicsos sobre Egipto fue un enigma envuelto en mitos y medias verdades. Los hicsos fueron algunas veces asociados err�neamente con los israelitas b�blicos, pero fueron mayormente olvidados en tiempos modernos debido a la escasez de textos escritos que puedan ser datados a su periodo de dominio.
