Los �rboles y los bosques, probablemente por su gran tama�o y a veces por su longevidad, excitaron vivamente la imaginaci�n de las sociedades arcaicas. Ten�an vida como los seres humanos y los animales, pero no se mov�an de un lugar a otro. Los �rboles, las monta�as y las piedras parec�an inm�viles, pero al mismo tiempo pod�an cambiar y balancearse. La floresta tupida de los bosques hubieron de parecer misteriosos. Incluso los �rboles solitarios que se llerguen en medio de la nada simbolizaron una columna que aguantaba los cielos sagrados, una escalera entre el mundo de los dioses y de los hombres, un �rbol sagrado.El �rbol fue considerado como encarnaci�n del principio vital, por una parte a trav�s de su ciclo de las estaciones del a�o representa el retorno de la regeneraci�n, de la eternidad, de los ciclos interminables de las estaciones . Por esta raz�n aparece en muchas religiones como portador de la inmortalidad, es el ser viviente que tiene la caracter�stica de tener y poder dar la vida eterna. Estos �rboles se encuentran en alg�n lugar sagrado, al final del mundo, en donde el cielo y la tierra se unen o en el mismo cielo.El monte sagrado es un lugar simb�lico rodeado de un aura sagrada y es aqu� en donde se celebran las ceremonias m�s importantes. En el monte sagrado, lo sobrenatural adopta un caracter propio y su poder se manifiesta a los hombres. Es aqu� en donde los elementos sobrenaturales se desencadenan y adoptan una manifestaci�n propia (relampagos, rayos, troncos con rostros, etc). En el monte sagrado se dan los v�nculos arcaicos afectivos que explican las relaciones de culto y veneraci�n, as� como la protecci�n de los bosques que a su vez nos amparan y protegen. El bosque sagrado esta habitado por presencias de entidades y esp�ritus tutelares. En cada �rbol, cada r�o, cada piedra y cada ser vivo late una conciencia bien conocida y reconocida por nuestros ancestros. En el monte cubano se encuentra la representaci�n ancestral de la uni�n entre la Madre Tierra y el Dios Padre Celestial por medio del �rbol de la Vida. Por lo tanto, en " El Monte", el pensamiento ancestral del afrocubano, sus creencias, tradiciones y saberes se insertan como parte de la mitolog�a universal. S�lo por este mero hecho, esta obra merece ser reconocida como todo un un cl�sico de la literatura cubana debido a que se ha convertido en la Biblia o texto sagrado de las religiones afrocubanas.Cuadernos de Estudios Afrocubanos publica escritos de autores cubanos y extranjeros sobre temas afrocubanos o asuntos relacionados con este tema.
