The lovely illustrations take liberties with Frost's iconic poem, as the Santa-like narrator of the poem takes his horse-drawn sleigh out into the woods to drop off food for the local birds and mammals in the deep of a New England winter. The book has been great to use in classroom discussions about the poem: Is it OK to go beyond the author's meanings(s)? Is the poem just about a nice day out to enjoy the snow falling on a forest? Or is it about death? Or, of course, both?

Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening
I aiways tried to capture the spirit of the poem when teaching it by using words only, but this lovely book adds a visual dimension that helps create the mood for those who need more than words. The lovely wooded scenes with trees laden in snow, and snow falling, absolutely draws the reader into Frost's mind and helps one read the poem on many levels. I used the book to teach a second grader in a private reading lesson where he could listen to and repeat words and phrases, and the pictures really aided his memory, so that even a few weeks later, he could repeat the poem and explain it to impress his mother. The book actualy gave me another dimension on words that I already knew by heart.
