A summer at his grandparents' South Dakota ranch is not eleven-year-old Cooper Sullivan's idea of a good time. But things are a bit more bearable now that he's discovered the neighbor girl, Lil Chance, and her homemade batting cage. Even horseback riding isn't as awful as Coop thought it would be. Each year, with Coop's annual summer visit, their friendship deepens from innocent games to stolen kisses, but there is one shared experience that will forever haunt them: the terrifying discovery of a hiker's body.

Because this book took place in SD where I live, I had to read it and it was wonderful and exciting and at times brought tears to your eyes. The suspense is great and so is the outcome.

Big Cats and Horse Farms
I found "Black Hills" to be an excellent read...I base this on one true thing in a book..."Does it grab you from the first page?" If you feel like I do then you will love this beautiful book set in the Black Hills of South Dakota. This book starts with two impressionable pre-teens and takes place on and off over the next 20 years...Dr. Chance realizes her dreams and Cooper Sullivan comes to terms with his fate..This being said...they make a great couple, but they take some time getting to this point..The book is set around a serial killer and all the trappings that go with his life and his involvement with Dr. Chance. The book starts on farms with the feeling of the horse world alive and active with the main characters. It then proceeds into Indian beliefs...what is real and what is not, and slips into the Chance Wildlife Rescue Center that has been Lil's dream since she was a young girl. This book is wrapped in lore, and also in the Big Cat data that will hold anyone's attention. Of course there is romance and girl talk, but this novel has it all and it is beautifully brought together by the last page. Do I recommend this book...yes!! It was a great read...one that I may enjoy again.
