With nothing but the clothes on his back-and something horrific snapping at his heels-Jack Winter fled his rural Georgia home when he was still just a boy. Watching the world he knew vanish in a trucker's rearview mirror, he thought he was leaving an unspeakable nightmare behind forever. But years later, the bright new future he's built suddenly turns pitch black, as something fiendishly familiar looms dead ahead. When Jack, his wife Aimee, and their two small children survive a violent car crash, it seems like a miracle. But Jack knows what he saw on the road that night, and it wasn't divine intervention. The profound evil from his past won't let them die...at least not quickly. It's back, and it's hungry; ready to make Jack pay for running, to work its malignant magic on his angelic youngest daughter, and to whisper a chilling promise: I've always been here, and I'll never leave. Country comfort is no match for spine-tingling Southern gothic suspense in Ania Ahlborn's tale of an ordinary man with a demon on his back. Seed plants its page-turning terror deep in your soul, and lets it grow wild.

Really fun, satisfying demonic possession horror. To me the first main downfall is the overall lack of suspense. Also, while the family's story interested me deeply, I felt like having the demon involved a bit more directly throughout the meat of the book would have really made it a five star to me. I'm also normally a creature horror fanatic, so vivid details of the demon tend to really grip me more than the demon acting through a child.
Onto positives: You get an interesting, beautifully described almost gothic horror tale of hereditary demonic possession told in two halves. One half in flashbacks from Jack, the main character's childhood. The other in current day events, with Jack's child acting weirder and weirder. The characters feel relatable and developed enough to get you involved without excess. At no point in this book did I feel it slow or dragging, so far the pacing honestly being one of my favorite aspects of Ahlborn's writing. While I mentioned the lack of suspense, the book did not fail to deliver that creepy sensation up my spine at multiple points just from descriptions. Overall it wasn't a mindblowing experience, I definitely loved The Shuddering a bit more. However, it was an excellent read that I could see myself coming back to.
